Hello and happy Sunday!
Last week, I wrote about 3 new pieces I picked up to try from Sezane. As I started to envision how these pieces would fit into my wardrobe, I thought it could be helpful to put together a visual capsule wardrobe and create outfits with the new pieces I was considering adding to my closet. I actually really enjoyed the exercise and I learned something too:
The green wool cardigan that I thought I was keeping? I couldn’t make that many outfits from it with the items I already have in my closet, likely because the green color didn’t layer well with other colors - I didn’t want to be limited to only wearing that cardigan with a white, black, or brown crop tank, so I’m actually going to be sending it back.
The wool dress* that I was unsure of? That’s an outfit in itself and I don’t have any knit dresses in my wardrobe at the moment. I love the fit and the details on the dress and I can imagine myself wearing it to an event in the next month or two, so it’s actually going to be staying.
As I started to put together outfits, I also pulled together a color “guideline” from shades that were common in those pieces. From here, a few opportunities stood out! I’ve been into the idea of barn jackets, suede, and mary janes for a while, but this exercise forced me to think about exactly how these items would fit into my life and which shades or colors would be the best fit with the color guideline I already had. I think it was helpful to start with inspiration and pull the color guideline from that, rather than start off with the color guideline and try to force outfits to fit.
I’ve already used this capsule wardrobe to plan outfits for two occasions (see below) and I plan to continue. I’ll be sure to share some outfits periodically over Substack, but you can also follow along on my Instagram (@costperfit).
If this post inspires you to do a similar exercise with your wardrobe, please don’t feel like you have to go out and buy a bunch of new things. Although I did add a few new items to my wardrobe (see below), you could use this exercise as a tool to create an edited collection of your own wardrobe and get creative with new outfit combinations, without purchasing anything at all. Feel free to adjust the colors and categories to reflect what fits your life best!
Here are the items that make up my 2024 fall capsule wardrobe! I’ve tried to link a budget/mid-priced/luxury item where possible, to offer options at all price points.

That’s all for today! If you found this post helpful, could you restack it and share with our community? Thank you!
