Cost per Fit: A Green Theory Coat I Never Wore
The dreamiest wool coat from that just wasn't right for me...and what I learned.
I purchased this dark green Theory coat from Shopbop in December 2021. It felt like the perfect coat for me for so many reasons - I loved the composition (90% wool, 10% cashmere), the minimal design (no buttons or noisy details), and the color (neutral, but still some color for my wardrobe). I live in a warm climate, so it wasn’t a huge deal to me that it wasn’t super warm. Plus it was on sale, discounted to about $300!
The thing is…I just…never wore it.
Since purchasing it in 2021, I have worn this coat 0 times. I realized that not only do I live in a warm climate, I also live in a pretty casual environment, where I feel super overdressed wearing a wool coat. Whenever it gets colder, I find myself reaching for my black Patagonia puffer coat, rather than anything that is super tailored.
I found myself wanting to hold onto this coat, even though I hadn’t worn it. After all, I spent about $300 on it! However, I realized that there is value tied up in this coat and if I won’t be wearing it, it’s important to sell it to try and recover as much value from it as possible. Thankfully, another buyer purchased this coat on Vestiare Collective after I listed it, and I’m grateful that it’s going to be going to a new home where it will hopefully get more use.
Lesson learned: It’s important to not just look at the composition, design, color, quality, and price of an item, but to also consider whether an item will fit into your day to day life (not your dream life).
What items have you purchased that you’ve never worn?
I've been keeping a cost per wear tracker for over a year and think it's such a great exercise to get to know your closet / your personal style :) love this series and hearing your reflections about it!
